Arc de Triomphe

One of the most famous landmarks in Paris, the Arc de Triomphe sits at one end of the Champs Elysees at the center of Place Charles de Gaulle. Napoleon ordered construction of the arch 1806 to honor his army. It wasn’t completed until 1836. In 1921 the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was added. Its eternal flame is re-lit every night at 6:30 p.m. You can view the arch from below or climb the 40 steps to the terrace for sweeping views across the city. There is also a museum on the first floor that is handicap-accessible.

Hours April 1 to Sept. 30, 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.; Oct. 1 to March 31, 10 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.; Closed Jan. 1, May 1, May 8 (morning), July 14 (morning), Nov. 11 (morning), and Dec. 25
Tickets  $14, free for children under 18
Andy’s Notes:

If you are in Paris on July 14 for Bastille Day, this is one of the best days to visit the Arc. The Arc is closed in the morning when a huge parade makes its way down the entire length of the Champs Elysees starting at around 10:45 a.m. and concluding around noon. A large flag flies from the Arc’s crown — it’s a great photo op.
