Hôtel des Invalides

The Hôtel des Invalides celebrates its 350th anniversary in 2020. The building dates back to 1671 when Louis XIV constructed it as a hospital and rehab center for the wounded and homeless veterans who had fought for France. Today this complex of buildings serves duel purposes. The Ministry of Defence still operates a hospital for injured and disabled war veterans here. There is also an army museum on the grounds with permanent and temporary exhibitions. Napoleon’s tomb and the tombs of many of France’s military heroes are at Les Invalides, as are two churches.

Hours 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday until 9 p.m., closed Easter Sunday and Monday, Ascension Day, Whitsuntide, Whit Monday, May 8, July 14, Aug. 15, Nov. 1, Nov. 11
Tickets $13.50 plus $7 for audio guide, children under 18 free
Andy’s Notes:

The tomb of Napoleon Bonaparte is located in the Dome church here. The gold dome rises 101 meters high and is a familiar part of the Paris skyline.
