Palace du Versailles

The Palace of Versailles is in the Île-de-France region about 20 kilometers southwest of Paris. The opulent manse served as the main residence for French royalty from 1682 to the beginning of the French Revolution in 1789. Constructed by Louis XIV it is an over-the-top opulent affair. Today you can tour the palace interior and splendid gardens with musical fountain shows on a day-trip from Paris. Inside you’ll find the awe-inspiring and ultra-gilded Hall of Mirrors. The most famous room in the palace, it is a long gallery with murals on the arched ceilings trimmed in gold and rows of crystal chandeliers and marble statues.

Hours Palace 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. — until 6 p.m., June through August, closed Monday and French holidays; Gardens 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. — until 8:30 p.m., June through August, closed French holidays

Andy’s Notes:

This is one of the most popular tourist attractions around Paris. Tickets are pricey and can be a bit complicated, as not all tickets offer admission to all the amenities — one gives you access to the entire estate at any time on the date purchased for instance, but excludes the musical fountain or garden shows. The website explains everything in English.
