Musée d’Orsay

A landmark building along the Left Bank of the Seine river, the Musée d’Orsay sits in a train station that was originally inaugurated for the 1900 Universal Exposition. The draw is the vast collection of Impressionist art from all the masters, including Matisse, Monet, Degas, Van Gogh and Rodin. While a fraction of the size of the Louvre, the museum’s permanent collection is still rather extensive, spanning four floors. If you want to avoid the crowds (the museum receives around 3 million visitors per year), time your visit before lunchtime or Thursday evenings, when it remains open until 9:45 p.m.

Hours Tuesday to Sunday, 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.; open Thursday until 9:45 p.m.
Tickets $15 (permanent and temporary collections) or reduced rate of $12; free the first Sunday of the month and for children and guests under 18.

Andy’s Notes:

Lifts and ramps allow for visitors in wheelchairs to access the entire museum. Large strollers and baby carriers aren’t permitted, but the museum’s cloakroom offers strollers you can borrow during the visit. If you plan on visiting a few museums while in Paris, the best deal is a combined ticket with the Musée de l’Orangerie ($20) or Musée Rodin ($23).
