The Centre Pompidou

It’s hard to miss the renowned caterpillar elevators climbing up the side of this piece of modern art, designed by Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers. One of the highlights of the trendy Marais district, The Centre Pompidou houses an impressive collection of 20th- and 21st-century art divided into two sections: the modern period, from 1905 to 1960 (which includes Matisse and Picasso), and the contemporary period, from 1960 to the present day (Andy Warhol, Niki de Saint Phalle, Anish Kapoor). The top floor features a rotating exhibit that changes annually. There’s also a panoramic viewpoint over Paris on the sixth floor.

Hours Monday, Wednesday, Friday to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Thursday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. for exhibitions on level 6.
Tickets $15 ($5 for viewpoint only); free on the first Sunday of the month and for children 13 and under.
Style Modern & Contemporary Art
Andy’s Notes:

The museum features spaces dedicated to children (ages 2 and up) and teenagers (ages 13-16) offering temporary exhibits, workshops, and activities. The museum will wrap up work on the piazza and “caterpillar” escalator at the end of 2020, but visitors can access the gallery floors using existing elevators. For entry to exhibitions in Galleries 1 and 2 on Level 6, it’s necessary to purchase an advance ticket for a specific time slot.
