Louvre Museum

The world’s most-visited museum receives nearly 15,000 visitors per day. The Louvre’s history spans 800 years, and the museum itself — a grand palace dating back to the late 12th century — has served as a royal residence and seat of power for French heads of state. Collections range from ancient civilizations to Western art from the Middle Ages to the mid-19th century. It’s tough to tackle the Louvre’s collection of more than 35,000 pieces of art in a single day, so narrow down your visit to a few of your favorite wings or masterpieces, like the Mona Lisa or Venus de Milo. Guided tours are a great way to get your bearings, but if you’d rather be your own guide, download the free “My Visit to the Louvre” app.

Hours Monday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Wednesday, Friday, and first Saturday of the month, 9 a.m. to 9:45 p.m.
Tickets $16 on site or $18 online (includes quick entry to the museum in 30 minutes or less); free the first Saturday of the month and on July 14; free for guests under 18 and for guests under 26 on Friday ev

Andy’s Notes:

The museum is constantly going through renovations, so some of the galleries may be closed. Check the website for details so you don’t risk being disappointed. There’s an underground parking garage if you happen to be arriving by car, as well as complimentary, self-service lockers beneath the Pyramid. You can book tickets and time slot reservations for permanent collections online, as well as 90-minute guided tours, which are conducted in French or English.
