France’s Most Popular Monument The Eiffel Tower

There is no other monument in France, perhaps the world, like the Eiffel Tower — the iconic, wrought-iron lattice structure that stands 1,063 feet tall and was built to celebrate the centenary of the French Revolution in 1889. The tower has three levels for visitors, thus three price ranges, with restaurants on the first and second levels, and a top level that measures 906 feet off the ground, making it the highest observation deck in Europe and providing million-dollar views of the city and beyond. The first two decks are accessible by elevator or staircase, the third by elevator only and access to the top level may be restricted during harsh weather or peak periods.

Hours June 13-Aug. 29th: 9 a.m.-12:45 a.m. (lift), 9 a.m.-12:30 a.m. (stairs); Rest of year: 9:30 a.m.-11:45 p.m. (lift), 9:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m. (stairs)
Tickets $11.60 to $28.85
Andy’s Notes:

It’s hard to believe that the Eiffel was supposed to stand for 20 years, then be demolished by the city in 1909. But luckily the structure was so valuable for wireless communications which relied on tall antennas that it was spared. Since Paris is synonymous with romance, it’s not surprising that the Eiffel is one of the top places in the world for marriage proposals — and weddings, with scores of ceremonies every year. Interestingly, Gustave Eiffel, the engineer and architect behind the tower, also designed elements of the Statue of Liberty, France’s gift to the United States that stands on an island in New York Harbor.
