Paris Sewer Museum and Tour

One of the city’s odder tourist attractions, the Musée des Egouts (Paris Sewer Museum) affords visitors an intriguing glimpse into the historic sewer system, first developed around 1370 and extending very slowly in the centuries that followed. Made up of a labyrinthine network of over 1,491 miles of tunnels and “galleries,’’ much of it is architecturally stunning, having been featured in such classic works of literature as Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables and Gaston Leroux’s Phantom of the Opera.

Hours 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday through Wednesday, May through September; 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., October through April.
Tickets $4.75
Andy’s Notes:

This attraction comes with a warning: “Is It as Disgusting as It All Sounds?  In a few words: the ‘ick’ factor is not exactly a small one on this tour. During the visit, you traipse across raised walkways and are able to see the sewage running below. If you’re sensitive to unpleasant smells, this may not be the museum of choice for you.” Enough said!

Tour Benefits

  • A new appreciation of waste management.
  • A unique glimpse under Paris’ city streets.
  • Considered one of the most unusual tours in Europe.
  • Great photo ops.
